A Note from the Commander

Dear AWANA Club Parent,

Raising children in today's society requires a great commitment on the part of every parent:  a commitment to provide the best possible childhood experiences for them in education, in moral and spiritual training, in relationships with their peers, and in relationships with adults as role models.  I believe that AWANA can help you provide your children with necessities through adult-directed games, Scripture memorization and Bible teaching.

Our goals in AWANA are "to reach boys and girls with the Gospel of Christ and train them to serve Him."  These goals reflect the direction of 2Timothy 2:15:  "Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth."  With your commitment and support, these goals are achievable.

Thanks for bringing your child(ren) to our club for the 2006-2007 year.  We hope this handbook will answer many of your questions regarding AWANA.  The handbook includes a schedule for the year and a list of AWANA leaders so that you can contact your child(ren)'s leader during the week.

Please feel free to visit us on a club night to see our club in action.  If you have any questions or concerns, do not hesitate to contact me.

AWANA commander,

Steve Derstine

What is AWANA?

AWANA is an international, nondenominational, Bible-centered, children/youth organization providing weekly clubs and programs for three-year olds through 12th grade students.  The acrostic AWANA comes from the letters of Approved Workmen Are Not Ashamed (2 Timothy 2:15).  There are over 10,000 clubs throughout the world.

HANDBOOK TIME

Handbook time provides opportunities for children to recite verses or complete sections from their handbooks.  When the director or leader is satisfied that the clubber has covered the handbook material adequately, he/she will sign the book.

COUNCIL TIME

Council time is a time for singing, praising God, and having a Bible lesson covering a variety of topics.

GAME TIME

Game time offers clubbers the opportunity to participate as team members in physical activities that develop team spirit, good sportsmanship, coordination skills, and self-confidence.  For Cubbies and Sparks, the competition is team-based, unlike the clubbers who compete against each other.  Because all clubbers are treated like winners, even if their team didn't win, game time provides a non-threatening atmosphere that encourages positive feelings.  We encourage parents to have children dress comfortably for play and to wear SNEAKERS.  If girls wear dresses or skirts, shorts should be worn underneath.

AWANA STORE

Clubbers will earn points at each club night.  In turn, they will be allowed to spend these points, on designated nights, at the AWANA store.  There will be prizes of many different values.  There will not be any candy offered as prizes in the store.

Your Involvement is Needed

Moms and Dads, Grandmothers and Grandfathers, and anyone else special in an AWANA clubbers life.

You are essential in helping your AWANA Clubber(s) to get the most enjoyment and fulfillment out of the AWANA Club.  Please see the following checklist as a guideline.

  1. Please enter the church through the FRONT door with your AWANA Clubber(s) each week and sign in!
  2. Encourage your AWANA Clubber(s) to attend AWANA every week.  Not only will consistency help the child(ren) to excel, but he or she is also a member of a color team that depends on each child's participation.
  3. Make sure that your AWANA Clubber(s) wears his or her uniform and pays the weekly dues.  Clubbers will be recognized each night for achievements.
  4. Be sure that your AWANA Clubber(s) arrives on time!  Promptness helps our program keep on track.
  5. Help your AWANA Clubber(s) accomplish at least one section each week and help with memorization during the week.  Your involvement will validate the child's efforts and motivate him or her to complete the handbook within the year.  AWANA Clubbers will be limited to a maximum number of sections each night, according to the group they participate in.
  6. Attend all major events.  You are always welcome and may attend any club meeting.
  7. Fill out a Medical Authorization Form for each Clubber.  This will alert us to any special medical conditions and grant us permission to seek emergency medical care if needed.
  8. Pick up your AWANA Clubber(s) PROMPTLY at 8:00 P.M..  If you desire to see the child(ren) warded any awards, please arrive at 7:45 P.M.
  9. Always encourage your AWANA Clubber(s).  Children have much more fun when someone shows an interest in their accomplishments.
